National Moth Week is a nonprofit organization that promotes public education about moths through global citizen science events. They reached out for volunteer help on a full redesign of their WordPress site.

This project included rethinking site architecture, improving user experience, and implementing a cleaner, more intuitive design system that highlights their core goals: helping users find local events, register as event hosts, and access educational resources.

Problem
Their current site wasn't easy to navigate and users had expressed confusion on finding local events and how to register their own event.

Solution
A complete revamp of the site nav, page architecture, and visual style to more align with modern websites and focus specifically on user needs.

Results
A redesigned WordPress website with a primary focus and easily accessible resources. Post-launch surveys were overwhelmingly positive, and the site saw a 15% increase in registrations.

Clarifying Purpose

The first conversation with the National Moth Week (NMW) team focused on identifying the true priorities of the website:

  • Help users find local events

  • Make it easy for hosts to register with NMW

  • Provide accessible educational resources

With those goals in mind, I restructured the site to better reflect user needs by:

  • Elevating the registration links to both the header and homepage

  • Reorganized navigational content based on user priorities

  • Creating a visually unified website

These simple changes helped streamline the user experience to help visitors quickly find what they need.

Site Navigation

I worked directly with the leadership team at National Moth Week to rethink the site’s structure from a user-first perspective. I led strategic conversations with questions like, “Why do users visit the site?” “What have they asked for?” and “What’s the site’s purpose, for you and for them?”

Using their insights, we restructured the navigation:

  • Realigning priorities

  • Removing outdated content

  • Adding missing resources

  • Regrouping pages into consolidated categories

The result was a clearer, more purposeful navigation system that better serves both the organization’s goals and the user's journey.

Asset Feedback

The new site looks great and registering my event was indeed quicker than last year

I think the new site looks great and I found the reg links immediately. Well done team!

Looks wayyyy better and everything felt easier to find this year and loved the resource tab now too

Modern User Flow

I incorporated animations, GIFs, and page transitions to create a smoother, more intuitive user experience. Simple motion like:

  • Page load motion to bring attention to numbers

  • Hover states for buttons for better understanding of interactive elements

  • Page-up/down animations for a more interesting scroll

These simple additions helps guide users on where to go next and clarifies what elements are interactive. These details reduced friction, encourage exploration, and make the site feel more dynamic.
